Practical on the road, rugged and tenacious off it – SUVs have claimed an increasingly large proportion of the UK market since about the 1980s. Only last year, in fact, SUVs were more popular than conventional cars and outsold more than any other segment of the national market, according to the Telegraph newspaper.
The only thing that might have put many buyers off owning one is the high cost of new models. Choosing a second-hand model and with the help of an independent car finance company (like ourselves) a prized SUV might be yours for less than £10,000.
Here are our top ten:
1. Toyota RAV4
First launched in 1994, you might think the RAV4 is getting a bit long in the tooth, but it has seen a number of facelifts in its lifetime. Known for its reliability and quality finish, a version as recent as 2010 might be found for less than £10,000;
2. Honda CR-V
What you get for your £10,000 of course depends on its condition and mileage – a higher mileage 2011 model or one from 2008, if you are looking for anything with less than 50,000 miles on the clock;
3. Nissan Qashqai
Definitely an on-road rather than off-road SUV (most are front-wheel drive only), a 2-litre version from around 2011 is likely to have only around 50,000 miles on the clock and still meet your £10,000 budget;
4. Volvo XC90
Winning top marks for safety, the XC90 can be surprisingly spritely, too – outperforming a supercharged Range Rover Sport Supercharged, for instance. For £10,000, you may be able to pick up a well-preserved 2008 model;
5. Lexus RX400h
For any example of this luxury marque, £10,000 is hardly likely to buy you anything at all recent – but they do hold their age, even with mileages up to 100,000, when a 2006 or 2007 model might come into range of your budget;
6. Kia Sportage
The critical year when looking at these models from Kia is 2010 – before that date a lot of people might have called them nasty, but post-2010 examples are considerably better made and for £10,000 you might find a good 2011 or even 2012 version that has done less than 75,000 miles;
7. Subaru Forester
Renowned for the quality of its engineering and rugged reliability, this 4×4 has held its price especially well and you may need to go as early as 2008 – or strike it lucky with a model as late as 2010 – that falls within your price range;
8. Land Rover Freelander 2
The top pick by television personality and used car specialist Honest John is the well-known Land Rover Freelander, which was top of its class for its launch in 2006 – now somewhat dated, a 2007 XS model might still be yours for less than £10,000;
9. Chevrolet Captiva
With less than 70,000 miles on the clock and made as recently as 2010, the Captiva represents pretty good value for money for your £10,000, which may even stretch to the top of the range LTZ model;
10. Mercedes-Benz M-Class
Not the classiest of Mercedes, this second generation M-class model was nevertheless in production until 2012 – your £10,000 is likely to buy a diesel version built in about 2006 or 2007, but still with less than 100,000 miles on the clock.
