Best electric cars for sale in the UK

White Electric Volvo Getting Recharged

In just 10 years’ time, it is estimated, more than a half of all new cars sold in the UK are likely to be electrically powered.

They are becoming more economical to buy, the mileage range on a fully-charged battery is steadily increasing, and more and more public charging points are being installed around the country.

Although everyone’s list is bound to be slightly different, here is a particular selection of six of the best new electric cars for sale in the UK:

1. Renault Zoe hatchback

This is probably the cheapest of the electric cars currently on the market – and tops the list of both Car Buyer and Tech Advisor.

It’s based on the ever-popular Renault Clio, but is somewhat roomier, especially in the boot.

On full charge, the battery takes you, on average and depending on the driving conditions, approximately 100 miles, which is a little limited and limiting by today’s standards. But the car does come with a home charger, which boosts the speed of recharging much faster than your conventional domestic electric socket.

2. BMW i3

Auto Express magazine goes more upmarket for its pick of the best on the market for 2017 with this model from the iconic BMW marque.

Even with the higher price tag, though, arranging your car finance through us at Car Finance Plus may bring it well within your pocket.

Since the range on the i3’s battery is limited to around 80 to 125 miles only, there is a range-extending booster pack which takes that up to around 200 miles or more.

3. Tesla Model X

If price really is no object – and we’re looking at around £100,000 here – the Model X from pioneers in modern electric cars, Tesla, takes a lot to beat.

A roomy SUV, with a seating capacity for 7 adults, there are two motors to drive each axle, which in the top of the range version delivers a thumping 503bhp and a blistering acceleration of 0-62mph in a lightning 2.8 seconds – very high performance indeed.

4. Nissan Leaf

Step back into more sedate mode – and a considerably more affordable price – might tempt you to buy this electric car from Nissan.

It is currently the best-selling electric car in the UK and comes with a choice of two motor sizes – 24kwh and 30kwh, delivering a mileage range of 124 and 155 miles respectively.

5. Hyundai Ioniq

This is probably best described as a middle of the range electric car, in terms of price, size and maximum mileage.

Its electric motor produces 118bhp, sufficient to propel the car from 0-62mph in 9.9 seconds. Using the fully-charged battery pack in more economical mode, though, and it is claimed you might get as long a mileage range as 174 miles.

6. Kia Soul EV hatchback

In competition with the likes of the Renault Zoe and Nissan Leaf in the conventional hatchback category is one of the latest arrivals on the EV scene, the Kia Soul EV hatchback.

Boot space is compromised somewhat by that taken up by the batteries – a space challenge for any electric vehicle – but a fully charged battery gives the Kia a claimed range of 132 miles.
